Heads Up!
An undercover operation by the sheriff's office led to the arrest of seven men on sex-related charges here and at other county parks April 5 and April 6 2023. Names, dates of birth, and hometowns were published.

In a two-day sting operation, Volusia County Sheriff's deputies arrested eight men at Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve and Sleepy Hollow Park. Names, photos, ages, and hometowns were publicized in local media.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office conducted the operation after receiving several complaints from residents about nefarious activities taking place out in the open. Capt. Shane Summers, who joined [Sheriff Mark] Chitwood during Friday's media conference, said many of the sex acts were performed in proximity to the walking trails at the parks. He also said some of the suspects were having sex a mere 20 feet away from the parking lot.

Chitwood said undercover detectives were walking along the trails and being solicited for sex. In one case, the sheriff said, a detective saw three men engaging in a sex act with each other.

Deputies said they captured some of the criminal activity Thursday with video cameras.

Chitwood said it was shocking that such "depravity" can happen in a place where anyone, including a child, could easily walk by and witness it.

"When you watch the videos, it is disgusting... I can’t believe this is happening in plain view."

In May, the Sheriff's Office installed still surveillance cameras in the parks, Chitwood said.

Also, "We have photos of at least 50-75 individuals engaged in lewd and lascivious acts directly in front of the cameras," sheriff's spokeswoman Laura Williams said. "We are in the process of identifying these individuals for potential charges and trespass warnings."

Eighteen men were arrested in six Volusia County parks in a week-long operation called "Operation Park Hopper," announced the County Sheriff Saturday, June 3, 2017. Seventeen arrests were for lewd activity and one was for battery. Names, photos, ages, hometowns, location of arrest, and charges for all eighteen men were published in local media.
