Gay bar that sells alcohol, closes at 2 am, leather theme and puppy theme oriented. Mixed crowd. No sex happens there. Edited on 11/17/22
infopop 2 Usergroup: Administrator Joined: May 16, 2002 Total Listings: 12 Total Reviews: 399 Report	Posted Jan 18 2016: I was at Ripcord last Friday night, January 15, to have a few drinks for a friend's birthday. We were there rather early, 8:30 onward, because we all have elderly dogs that need attention. At first the bar wasn't busy at all. The bartenders were very friendly and a few of the regular crowd were there. Some parts of Ripcord have been fixed up. It's an old bar with what seem to be a couple of structures joined together plus the outside patio. Many of the floors are uneven and can be hard to navigate in the dark. Some areas, especially the bathrooms, now have reflective paint and other additions to help prevent slips and falls. We were told that Blackhawk Leather, the adjacent big leather store which also had a small store inside the Ripcord, was very recently closed. As the evening wore on the place got busier. One of the local leather clubs opened up the patio bar and started selling drinks there. Since it was a rather cool evening — for Houston — there weren't too many folks outside when we were there. Unfortunately, we had to leave around 11 to get home for the dogs. The bar is usually busiest after then, especially if there is a special event, contest, etc. Typically you can find a little action on the patio in quiet times or, obversely, when the place is extremely busy and totally packed. However, it's important to use some discretion and not endanger the bar's liquor license. TABC has been known to crack down on bars where there is overt sexual activity. You should expect to see many people here, both locals and from out of town, on LUEY Weekend held every year just after Mardi Gras. It will be on February 11-14 this year. The host bars, including Ripcord, typically have dark areas set aside and things can get what we call "festive." The after-party on Sunday at the Ripcord typically is the most "festive" of all. Report	Posted Sep 30 2013: Still some action on the patio and in the restrooms, but you've got to be discreet and use your judgement. It is not busy Sunday afternoons unless the Texans are on TV. Generally there is an older but playful clientele. A few leather clubs host events here still, but it's not what it was in the past. There are now cameras that view a couple areas of the bar and patio, but you can find an out of the way spot. I played and sucked with a hot Daddy for a few minutes the other day. Evenings are busier at the Eagle downtown. Edited on 10/07/13
Report	Posted Jan 05 2012: The Rip is not as busy as it used to be, but the dollar vodka specials Sundays draw a friendly older clientele. Although there are signs posted declaring "No Sex Allowed" due to a crackdown last year, I've seen discrete play Sunday afternoons at the back of the patio. Use your judgement and have fun. Report	Posted Mar 16 2010: Still a great bar, though hit and miss on the action nowadays. They leave people alone until it is close to closing time when they break it up. Otherwise, pretty much anything goes on the patio and they close their eyes to it. Edited on 03/16/10
ross Report	Posted Feb 21 2010: I was there Saturday night when the manager of the bar came out on the patio to scream at patrons. Just not a fun place anymore, even on special weekends. Edited on 02/22/10
